This Virgin Valley specimen preserves a slender fragment of petrified wood containing contrasting black and white common opal. Glossy black opal occupies prominent recessed areas, while white opal appears along several edges and seams against the brown, fibrous-looking wood texture; no play of color is present.

About Opal in Petrified Wood

Opal is a hydrated form of silica with the formula SiO₂·nH₂O and a Mohs hardness of approximately 5.5–6.5. In opalized wood, silica-bearing material replaces or fills portions of the original wood structure, sometimes retaining recognizable grain-like textures; this example contains black and white common opal without play of color.
